Half-Day Professional Development on Disciplinary Literacy
This half-day professional development is intended for middle school content-area teachers and will focus on practical, classroom-based approaches to disciplinary literacy. The session will support teachers in thinking about how literacy development can be meaningfully integrated into instruction across disciplines while honoring students’ cultural, linguistic, and intellectual assets.
Participants will receive practical applications, support materials, and a sample outline of a week’s worth of lessons that demonstrate how disciplinary literacy practices can be woven into content-area teaching.
Possible areas of focus include:
- an overview of foundational disciplinary literacy skills
- vocabulary development strategies, including morphology and root/stem word study
- chunking activities and scaffolds for reading complex texts
- culturally sustaining pedagogies and asset-based approaches to literacy instruction
- concrete strategies that teachers can immediately adapt for their own classrooms
The final session content will be tailored after a needs assessment survey is completed, so that the professional development reflects the specific needs and priorities of the teachers and site.
Cost for half-day session: $1,200.00
Formal contracts, including final content and deliverables will be executed after the needs assessment is completed, and school/district partner sets date and agrees to the professional development workshop.
