Literacy Community Partnerships
Through partnerships with schools and community organizations across the San Diego region, the SDSU Literacy Center creates affirming spaces where young people and educators can draw on their languages, cultures, identities, and lived experiences as resources for literacy learning. These collaborations advance community-centered approaches to reading, writing, storytelling, and professional learning while strengthening voice, belonging, and connection.
In partnership with El Centro Cultural de la Raza and High Tech High Chula Vista, Cuentos Community Writing Workshops bring educators together to share their stories and celebrate their cultures, languages, voices, and histories.
Developed with the San Diego Unified School District Welcome Center, the Eager Eagle Readers Nest provides multilingual newcomer students with a safe, welcoming space for reading, writing, art, play, and other multimodal literacy experiences.
This longitudinal partnership examines how community-centered, project-based, and multiliteracies instruction can support historically marginalized and multilingual learners by centering students’ identities, languages, cultures, and lived experiences.
